Peg Milliken was a familiar face at the Kingston Sheep Dog Trials Festival for more years than any one of us can lay claim to, except perhaps, her daughter Amanda.
There isn’t a handler, a volunteer, a staff person, or even a dog for that matter, who hadn’t enjoyed Pegs company over the years: on the bench during the competition, at her home near the trials field, over a meal, or at one or more social gatherings before, during, or after the trials. Not a year went by that Peg didn’t make a contribution to the event, whether it was hosting a handler’s dinner, providing accommodations for judges from afar, helping out in the hospitality tent, or just cheering on the competitors and lending moral support. In more recent years, she often regaled visitors with stories of long ago, and serenaded us with a familiar jazz tune when the opportunity presented itself. She was a joy to spend time with.
Peg passed away this year, on March 11, at the age of 91. We will always remember her with great fondness and admiration, as this trials’ biggest supporter.
We dedicate this year’s trial to her memory!
